Vite: a build tool for modern web development

Vite is a development and build tool for web projects. It is designed to make local development responsive and to prepare application assets for production. Those are related jobs, but they are not the same as guaranteeing that the finished website will load quickly for every visitor.

A responsive development process

During development, Vite uses a development server and modern JavaScript module support. Changes can reach the browser without rebuilding the entire application in the same way a traditional full-bundle workflow might require.

Hot Module Replacement, or HMR, updates affected modules while the developer works. Shorter feedback cycles make it easier to inspect a change and continue editing. Some source formats still need transformation, so it is inaccurate to describe the process as requiring no compilation at all.

Framework support

Vite works with tools and frameworks such as Vue and React through the appropriate integrations and plugins. A project can use those integrations to connect framework-specific development needs with the build process.

Configuration and extension

Defaults provide a starting point, while configuration and plugins let a team adapt the setup. Existing projects still need their asset paths, environment variables and deployment process checked when changing build tools.

Production is a separate step

A production build prepares the assets to be served to visitors. Its output should be tested as part of the application, including page loading and dynamic features. Dependencies, images, third-party scripts and server behaviour still affect the final experience.

Vite is useful because it supports a clear development workflow and a configurable build process. Evaluate those benefits in the project itself rather than treating a build-tool choice as a performance guarantee.
