In the AI era you do not need an agency. You need someone who answers for the result

Two years ago, if you wanted a website or an app, you paid for every hour someone spent on it. Today artificial intelligence handles a large share of that work. Page layouts, the first version of the code, copy, images, all of it appears in a fraction of the time. Every business owner is now asking the same simple question: what am I actually paying a supplier for when AI does most of the work?

The answer is the same as it has always been, AI has just made it obvious. You pay for someone who takes responsibility for the result. And for that you do not need an agency with five layers of people. You need a team of programmers you talk to directly.

What AI has really changed

Tools such as Lovable, Cursor, v0 or Replit now let someone with no programming background click together a working first version of a website or app. It looks good, you can show it to customers, you can take it to an investor. The routine part of development that used to eat most of the budget now costs a tenth of what it did.

The head of a Czech development company recently said in a podcast that AI had taken roughly eighty percent of their work. After a short training session their clients build the first version of the product themselves, and the company finishes the last twenty percent: security, correct data storage, deployment and further development. That twenty percent is exactly what people pay for, because that is where the responsibility sits.

In other words, AI has not removed the need for a supplier. It has removed the need to pay for routine work and for the layers of people between you and whoever actually builds your website.

What you have always paid for: responsibility

When your website goes down on a Friday evening, when orders vanish from your online shop or when your app leaks customer data, it does not help that AI generated it. What helps is a person who knows why it happened, can fix it and answers for it. AI cannot do that and will not be able to any time soon.

Responsibility takes three concrete forms:

  • Someone judges whether the generated code is sound. AI writes whatever you ask for. It will not notice that you forgot to secure a form, that passwords are stored unencrypted or that the site collapses under a hundred simultaneous visitors. A programmer who saw and fixed those mistakes long before AI existed will.
  • Someone has your back when things break. A tool will not pick up the phone. A supplier who maintains your website will.
  • Someone decides what makes sense. AI will happily add twenty features. An experienced programmer tells you which three will bring customers and which will only slow the site down.

Why an agency struggles in the new model

A traditional agency is built on hours. Account manager, project manager, designer, coder, tester, each logs their time and you pay the sum plus a margin. That model made sense while routine work was expensive and there were people to coordinate.

Once AI handles the routine in minutes, what remains in the price is mostly the layers. You pay for information being passed between people who never meet you. Your request goes through three pairs of hands before it reaches the person who actually does it, and their question travels the same route back. It is not bad faith, it is structure. And in the AI era that structure is the most expensive part.

A smaller but more common problem is reselling. Many companies that offer you a website do not build it. They hand it to a freelancer or send it abroad, add a margin, and you never speak to the person writing your code.

Instead of an agency: a team of programmers you talk to directly

The opposite extreme, a single freelancer, has a different weakness. When they fall ill, move away or change careers, you are left with a website nobody looks after. Suppliers often say goodbye exactly like that, quietly, by no longer replying.

The sensible middle ground is a small team of programmers. Big enough that you do not depend on one person, small enough that you speak directly to whoever builds your website or app. No account manager, no reselling. When you want a change, you tell the programmer and they make it. When something breaks, they know exactly where to look because they built it.

That is how devBoys has worked since 2017. We use AI to the full, we would be foolish not to. The difference is that every project has a programmer who can judge what AI generated, because they were writing code long before AI existed. You do not get an AI template or the kind of generated code the internet is full of, and yet you pay a price that takes AI into account.

What it looks like in practice: three routes to a website or app

1. Build the first version yourself, we check it and finish it

Have an idea for an app or website and want to test it first? Build the first version in Lovable, Cursor, v0 or Replit. Once you know customers want it, bring it to us. We go through security, data storage, speed and whether it can be built on. We either give the prototype a solid foundation or move it 1:1 onto ours and develop it further. Nobody holds you back while you are still finding out whether the idea works, and you do not go to your first customers with an app that never passed through a programmer's hands. Details are on our website and prototype takeover page.

2. You want a finished website with a fixed price and deadline

You do not want to learn tools, you want customers. For sole traders and small businesses we build websites at a fixed price from 9,990 CZK including copy, images and Google setup. Our prices are public on the pricing page, so you know in advance what you will pay.

3. You already have a website or app and want to develop it

For companies with their own website or app we offer website maintenance and long-term development in monthly packages from 6,900 CZK. One-off changes are billed by the hour at 750 CZK. Every month you know what was done and what it cost.

What to check with a supplier before you sign

Whether you come to us or go anywhere else, these five questions will save you a lot of trouble:

  1. Will I talk to the person who actually builds the website? If not, you are paying for middlemen.
  2. Who is responsible for security and functionality? Ask for a name, not a department.
  3. What happens if that person leaves? With an individual there is no answer. With a team there is.
  4. Is the price known in advance? A fixed price means the supplier carries the risk, not you.
  5. Who owns the code and the data? You do. Anything else is a trap.

Summary

AI has made routine work cheap and revealed what you were always paying for: responsibility. You will not get that from a tool or from layers of people at an agency, but from programmers who build your website, stand behind it and pick up the phone when needed. If you want to find out first whether your idea can go somewhere, write to us. A programmer will reply, not a salesperson.

Frequently asked questions

If I build my website or app myself in Lovable, what do I need a programmer for?
For what the tool cannot see. Securing forms and logins, storing data correctly, behaviour under load, backups and deployment to a server. A prototype from an AI tool usually looks good but lacks the solid foundation you can build on. A programmer checks it, completes it and takes responsibility for it working.
Does devBoys use AI in development?
Yes, fully. The difference is that every project has a programmer with experience from before AI, the company has been programming since 2017. They can judge what AI generated and will not deliver an AI template or the meaningless code the internet is full of.
Is a team of programmers not more expensive than a single freelancer?
For a one-off website the price comes out similar, because you pay for the result at a fixed price, not for the number of people. The difference comes later: when the freelancer stops, you are left with a website nobody maintains. With a team there is always someone who knows the site and picks up the phone.
